6 Habits That Help You Remember Your Medicine
Forgetting a dose is one of the most ordinary things in the world. Busy mornings, changed routines and a long course of tablets all make it easy. The good news is that a few small habits make it much less likely.
This article is general information, not medical advice. Always follow what your doctor or pharmacist told you about your own medicine.
1. Tie the dose to something you already do
The most reliable reminder is a habit that already exists. Take the tablet right after brushing your teeth, or with your first cup of tea. This works better than picking a clock time with no link to your day.
2. Keep the medicine where you will see it
Out of sight really does mean out of mind. Put it next to the kettle, your toothbrush or your keys, unless the label says to store it somewhere cool or away from children. Keep a travel supply in your bag so a day out does not break the routine.
3. Set a reminder that is hard to ignore
A quiet notification is easy to swipe away. For medicine that matters, use a reminder that rings like an alarm and needs a tap to dismiss. Set it for the time you actually take the dose, not an hour earlier.
4. Record each dose
Mark a dose as taken when you take it. If you wonder later “did I already have it?”, you can check instead of guessing. This matters most for people who take several medicines, or who share care with a family member.
5. Watch your stock
Running out is a common reason doses are missed. Keep a count of the tablets left and set an alert a few days before you run out, so there is time to visit the pharmacy or ask for a refill.
6. Tell someone who can help
If a parent or relative takes regular medicine, agree on a simple way to check in. A short message when a refill is due is often enough.
Where a reminder app fits
A good reminder app does the repetitive part for you: the schedule, the alarm, the log and the stock count. Bao, our new pill and medicine reminder, is built around that.
- Add each medicine with its schedule and reminder times, from a list of more than 5,700 built-in names.
- Choose a notification with Taken and Snooze buttons, or an alarm that rings over the lock screen until you answer.
- Log doses as taken, skipped or missed, and undo a tap within five seconds.
- Track how many are left and be reminded to refill.
- Send a refill request or a note to a family member through WhatsApp, a text message or the share sheet. You see the message before it is sent.
Privacy matters most with health information. Bao keeps your medicines and doses on your phone. It has no account, no ads and no analytics, and it does not send your medicine data to us or anyone else. Our Bao privacy policy explains this in full.
Start small
You do not need all six habits at once. Link the dose to a daily habit and set a reminder you cannot ignore, then add the others as they become natural.
If you have trouble keeping to a schedule, or you are unsure what to do about a missed dose, ask your pharmacist or doctor.
