Bao: Pill & Medicine Reminder privacy policy

Last updated

This privacy policy applies to the Bao: Pill & Medicine Reminder app (hereby referred to as “Application”) for mobile devices that was created by Mazze Studios (hereby referred to as “Service Provider”) as a Commercial service. This service is intended for use “AS IS”.

In short

Bao keeps your medicines and your reminders on your phone. It has no account. It does not send your medicines, doses or settings to the developer or to anyone else. It has no advertising, no analytics and no crash-reporting service. The only thing that goes online is the Pro purchase (see “Pro and RevenueCat”).

What the app stores, and where

Everything you enter is kept in a database in the app’s private storage on your phone:

  • the medicines you add (name, form, strength, colour, notes), their schedules and reminder settings;
  • what you log: doses taken, skipped or missed, and when;
  • stock counts and refill settings;
  • the pharmacy and family-member names and phone numbers you choose to save;
  • your settings (language, theme, usual times, sounds).

The app cannot read this data from another app, and no other app can read it from the app.

What leaves your phone

Your medicines and doses never leave your phone by themselves. The app has one network permission, used only for the Pro purchase (see “Pro and RevenueCat”).

Things you start yourself:

  • Sharing. When you tap a button to ask for a refill or to tell a family member (WhatsApp, a text message or the share sheet), the app prepares a short message and hands it to the app you pick. What the message says (a medicine’s name, how many are left) is shown to you before you send it, and it leaves your phone only if you send it from that app. From then on that app’s own privacy policy applies.
  • Backups you make. “Export” writes one file with your data to a place you choose (your files, a cloud folder, an e-mail). Keep it private: it lists your medicines. The app does not upload it.
  • Phone calls and messages. The app opens WhatsApp, the messaging app or the share sheet; it does not make calls and does not read your contacts.

Android’s own backup

Your phone’s operating system can back up app data (Android Auto Backup) to your Google account, and move it to a new phone. For this app, only the database file (the list above) is included; the sounds, notifications and other files are not. That copy is held by Google under your Google account and Google’s terms, and is encrypted by Android. You can switch it off in your phone’s settings (Google → Backup). The developer has no access to it.

What the app asks your phone for

The app asks for permission to show notifications, to ring at an exact minute, to start again after a restart and to open over the lock screen for an alarm-style reminder. These let it remind you on time. It does not ask for your location, contacts, camera, microphone, photos, files or accounts. See permissions.md for the full list.

The medicine-name list

When you type a medicine’s name, the app suggests names from a list that is bundled inside the app, built from Wikidata (released under CC0, public domain). The search happens on your phone; what you type is not sent anywhere.

Pro and RevenueCat

Bao Pro is a single payment made through Google Play. To show the price, take the payment, restore it on a new phone and check that you still own Pro, the app uses Google Play Billing and RevenueCat, a purchase service (https://www.revenuecat.com).

  • RevenueCat is used anonymously. The app does not give it your name, e-mail, account or any id of its own. RevenueCat makes a random anonymous id for the phone.
  • What RevenueCat receives: that random id, your purchase (the Google Play purchase token and the product) and whether Pro is active, and the technical details any online request carries: the app and Android version, the country and language, and the time.
  • What it never receives: anything about your medicines, doses, schedules, stock, contacts or settings.
  • It is not used for advertising or for anything but the purchase, and the app shares it with no one else. RevenueCat’s own policy is at https://www.revenuecat.com/privacy.
  • The app asks again whether you own Pro when it starts and now and then when you come back to it (at most once an hour). If you are offline it keeps what it last knew: you do not lose Pro because of a bad connection.
  • The app does not see your card details or your name; Google Play does that.

To have the anonymous purchase record removed, write to help@mazzestudios.com, the developer asks RevenueCat to delete it.

Children

The app is not directed at children. It is a reminder tool for adults and for people who look after someone’s medicines.

A medical disclaimer

Bao is a reminder tool, not medical advice. It does not diagnose or treat anything and does not check doses or interactions. Always follow your doctor’s or pharmacist’s advice and read your medicine’s leaflet. The app’s own screen “About & disclaimer” says the same.

Deleting your data

Uninstalling the app deletes its database from your phone. Inside the app you can delete each medicine (and its history leaves with it). Backups you exported, and any copy Android’s backup holds, are yours to delete in the place you saved them.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version is published at the same address with a new date. The app does not collect an e-mail address, so it cannot notify you.
